Computational Cardiovascular Modeling
Lik Chuan Lee Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering Michigan State University
2
Computational cardiovascular modeling
Understand the mechanism(s) of heart diseases and physiology Test hypotheses (inexpensive, compared to animal experiments) Analyze / optimize treatments. Quantify potential biomarker (stress) that cannot be measured in vivo.
3
Scientific & Technical Challenges
Complexity of the multi-physics and their interactions involved organ to cellular physiology and diseases Sparsity of data from human Multiple temporal / spatial scale In vivo vs. ex vivo (Are they the same?) Lengthy computation time limits deployment of computer model for time-critical clinical applications e.g. surgery

Specific Research Focus Areas
Short-term physics Electro-mechanics (S.T. Wall, Simula) Integration with system physiology (D. Burkhoff, CRF) Incorporating FSI (T. Gao, MSU) Long-term physics Integration with short-term physics Cell – ECM long-term interactions (S. Roccabianca & S.W. Watts, MSU) Diseases & treatments Adult PH (S. Baek, MSU; L. Zhong et al., NHCS) Pediatric PH (S. Baek, MSU; Figueroa et al., UoM) LBBB + CRT (G.S. Kassab, CalMI2) LVAD for HF Treatment?
