Linking Verb Action Verb Direct Object Predicate Adjective Predicate Noun Subject Complement An action verb tells what the subject of the sentence is doing Is a word that is in the predicate of the sentence, but it renames the subject of the sentence Is a word that is in the predicate of the sentence, but it describes the subject of the sentence. A word that is after the linking verb, but it refers back to the subject by either describing or renaming the subject. It complements the subject Is the object involved in the action. It answers the questions who or what A linking verb links the subject to a word that describes it or renames it. Click on the word to see the definition.

Predicate Noun Are nouns that are located anywhere after the linking verb, but they give another name for the subject. JUNE and TEACHER are both nouns that name who June is. SHE and JUNIOR are both nouns that tell who She is. He is June was a She will be a Ben looks smart. teacher. happy. junior. There are two types of subject complements, predicate adjectives and predicate nouns. Predicate Adjectives Are words that are located anywhere after the linking verb, but they DESCRIBE the SUBJECT of the sentence. The word SMART describes the subject HE. The word HAPPY describes the subject BEN.
