Constantine & Christianity
Diocletian and his co- emperor stepped down in 305 CE and the next emperor to rule was known as Constantine Constantine assumed control of the Western roman Empire while Licinius took control of the Eastern Roman Empire

Freedom of Religion In 313 CE, Constantine and Licinius declared the freedom to worship any religion through Rome This meant that Christians would no longer be persecuted and were free to practice their religion openly as well as build churches

A Christian Victory While they had both agreed to tolerate all religions, Licinius was continuing to allow the persecution of Christians In 324 CE, Constantine defeated Licinius in several battles to take control of both halves of the Roman Empire

Building A Faith In 325 CE, Constantine led a meeting at Nicaea in order to resolve a major disagreement between the western and eastern leaders of Christianity Constantine declared Christianity the official religion of Rome and constructed a church on the spot of Jesus’s crucifixion and helped to build St. Peter’s church in Rome

A New Capital In 330 CE, Constantine decided to move the capital of Rome to the city of Byzantium Constantine had grown up in the area and Rome had not been the political center of the empire for some time already Constantine filled the city with riches and called it New Rome, but it was later changed to Constantinople

Invasions and the End of Rome
After the death of Constantine, Germanic tribes laid siege to the Roman Empire and looted all the major cities The Visigoths captured Rome in 410 and the Vandals later did in 455 CE The last Roman Emperor was a fourteen year old named Romulus Augustulus and with his banishment in 476, the Western Roman Empire was no more while the East became the center of the Byzantium Empire for 1,000 years
