1 Community and Technical Colleges

2 Success in the New Economy Kevin Fleming Citrus College

3 Why is this important? Misalignment between education and workforce
Perceived higher earning “university for all” philosophy Ideology that any university degree $$$ Misalignment between degrees and job skills Shrinking job market, increasing education costs and oversaturation of degrees “university for all” Perception that the higher degree means higher pay and therefore pushes the “university for all” philosophy The next slide shows a visual comparing the job market from 1960 to 2018 This is why many educators, mentors, etc. push students going to any university and earning any degree Misalignment between degrees and job skills is resulting in half of university graduates being underemployed in grey collar jobs that do not pay enough for them to live and pay back their student loans

4 Prediction from Harvard university
The red represents careers that require education that you can only get at a community college That word “skilled” is very important. If a student earns a BA degree in Philosophy, what skills do they have? They now have an education, but what do they know how to do? I’m going to share my story with you guys….

5 “Post High School Credential for All”
1:2:7 “Post High School Credential for All” Salaries can be deceiving for university graduates For every occupation that requires a masters or doctorate, there is one job. For Bachelor degrees there are two jobs and for CTE, there are 7 jobs. Even if more students graduate from college, this number will not change. Therefore more and more bachelor graduates will have to settle for those grey collar jobs. Talk about graphic
