The HAPSBURGS governed Austria for over 600 years; they also headed the Holy Roman Empire until it was dissolved in 1806.

EVERY monarch signed in agreement, except for one…..
Charles VI wanted to make sure his daughter, MARIA THERESA, could inherit the throne without any trouble when he died (he had no sons) In order to ensure this, he issued what was called the “Pragmatic Sanction” – it was a document which requested all European monarchs to respect his daughter’s right to rule Austria upon his death EVERY monarch signed in agreement, except for one…..

MARIA THERESA ( ) Vienna – she makes her capital a showplace; it became the CULTURAL CAPITAL of Europe Motherhood – she has 16 children (11 girls, 5 boys) – many will become future emperors, queens, etc. (ex: Marie Antoinette of France!)

War of the Austrian Succession
*the Austrian province of SILESIA was invaded by Prussia, led by Frederick William II (Frederick the Great) *In turn, Maria Theresa declares war on Prussia because of the invasion Soon, other European countries begin “choosing up sides”…..this escalates into a FULL-SCALE WAR…… This becomes known as the SEVEN YEARS WAR in Europe

The part of the war that was fought in North America was called the “FRENCH & INDIAN WAR”
England and Prussia are victorious over France, Austria & Russia. FRANCE is definitely the BIGGEST LOSER, having to give up almost all of its territory in North America to England…..England comes out the BIGGEST WINNER.
