3 The French Revolution was a period of political changes that occurred in France from 1789 to 1815.

4 Before the French Revolution, the people of France were divided into three estates based on their social class.

5 The clergy made up the First Estate and the nobles made up the Second Estate.

6 The First and Second Estates did not have to pay taxes and enjoyed special rights.

7 The bourgeoisie (middle class), city workers, and peasants made up the Third Estate.

8 About 98% of France’s population belonged to the Third Estate; they paid all of the taxes and lacked rights.
