1 Aim # 57: How are humans adapted for reproduction?
Date: March 10th, 2017-period 1 Aim # 57: How are humans adapted for reproduction? HW: Daily Review of class notes. All Labs due Monday  (not including Development of Human Fetus Lab) Do Now: Define the life function reproduction. What are the two types of reproduction? Name two characteristics of each. Which type do humans carry out?

2 Aim #57: How are humans adapted for reproduction?

3 Look Who’s Talking What happened during the movie clip?
Why were their so many sperm released into the female reproductive system? Why did only one sperm nuclei fertilized the egg?

4 Reproductive System Endocrine System
1) What are the two major anatomical adaptations that aid humans for reproduction? Reproductive System Endocrine System

5 2) Female Reproductive System
Ovaries – produce egg cells & hormones estrogen & progesterone Oviduct or Fallopian Tube – site of fertilization, carries egg to uterus Uterus – site where embryo develops Vagina – birth canal & site that allows for internal fertilization

6 3) Male Reproductive system
Testes – produce sperm & hormone testosterone Scrotum – sac that keeps testes cool Vas deferens - carry sperm from testes to penis Seminal vesicle & Prostate gland – produce liquid with glucose for sperm. Why? Urethra – carries urine & semen out of body

7 Brain Pop- Reproductive Systems (~2 minutes)

8 Aim # 57: How are humans adapted for reproduction?
Date: March 13th, 2017 Aim # 57: How are humans adapted for reproduction? HW: Daily Review of class notes. Human Reproduction Packet due Friday Do Now: Labs??? Turn them in! Compare the male and female reproductive system. Identify.. Gonads Sex cells hormones

9 4) What is the name of this process & where does it take place?
46X Meiosis Gonads 23X 23X 23X 23X

10 5) Sexual Reproduction:
23 Fertilization 23 46 + Zygote Egg A fertilized egg cell is called a Zygote Sperm Characteristics of Sexual Reproduction: 1) Is the creation of a new individual from parents. 2 2) Offspring are not genetically to the parents. identical

11 6) Internal Fertilization:
Eggs and sperm meet inside the female’s body Occurs in most land vertebrates Ex. Reptiles, birds, mammals

12 7) External Fertilization:
Eggs fertilized outside female’s body Occurs mostly in aquatic environments Ex. Fish, amphibians HAZARDOUS – many eggs and sperm are produced so some survive Eggs and sperm may not meet, they may be eaten or environmental conditions may change

13 8) Embryonic Development
An embryo is a developing offspring. Development can be either INTERNAL or EXTERNAL, depending on the organism.

14 9) INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT
Embryo develops inside the female, placenta provides nourishment

15 Human Fertilization Internal fertilization – male penis is used to introduce sperm into female’s vagina.

16 10) Where does fertilization usually occur?
Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes (oviduct) Ovary Fertilization Egg

17 11) How many eggs are released a month by a female?
Normally one egg is released per month, however, sometimes TWO can be released at the same time. Ovulation

18 12) What happens after fertilization?
The embryo travels to the uterus and implants itself in the uterus lining

19 Summary Questions How are internal and external fertilization different? What types of organisms carry out external fertilization? Why? How are internal and external development different? Name an example of an organism that carries out each. In humans, where does fertilization occur? Where does the embryo implant and continue to develop?

20 Male Reproductive System Female Reproductive System
Summary continued… Male Reproductive System Female Reproductive System D &E Testes Scrotum Vas deferens Seminal vesicle and prostate gland Urethra Ovaries Oviduct Uterus Vagina F B C Can you state the function of each and identify the structure on a diagram??
