4. The Rise of City Life:
The Sumerian region was full of city settlements.
A region is a large geographical area that shares a similar weather system, traditions and culture.
Cities were large and complicated settlements that required rule of law. This led to the creation of governments to help organize and control the way in which people lived, worked and spent their money.
Surplus food helped grow the size of families and the size of the labor force. More people, more jobs!
People farmed and gave their wheat and barley to the city to be stored in secure places for sharing with others.

5. Continued:
Food surpluses also led to trade with other cities: the Northern cities traded with the Southern cities for resources the other did not have. For ex. valuable crops were exchanged or traded for copper and other precious metals.
Precious metals were used to make weapons, pots and jewelry for personal decoration. That’s right – bling!
A writing system called cuneiform helped “scribes” keep records about trades, rules for how to live and behave, as well as messages that were sent to far off places;
Scribes wrote on wet clay tablets with a writing tool called a stylus;
An education system developed to help people learn to be scribes. Mostly boys went to school!
