One of the original aims of Gwilym Davies in creating the Message of Peace and Goodwill in 1922 was to contribute to world peace by enabling young people in Wales to connect with their peers across the world, sharing their ideas, dreams and experiences

4. 2002: ‘Welcome Calcutta’ Campaign 2002: Ymgyrch ‘Croeso Calcutta’
2002 was one of the years where Gwilym Davies’ dream became reality
In that year the Urdd worked with Christian Aid on themes of poverty, homelessness and violence, focusing on the experiences of children and young people in Calcutta, India
2002 oedd un o’r blynyddoedd lle daeth breuddwyd Gwilym Davies yn wir.
Yn y flwyddyn honno gweithiodd yr Urdd gyda Chymorth Cristnogol ar themâu tlodi, digartrefedd a thrais, gan ffocysu ar brofiadau plant a phobl ifanc Calcutta, India

5. 2002: ‘Welcome Calcutta’ Campaign 2002: Ymgyrch ‘Croeso Calcutta’
Here’s a quote from the Message:
“By sharing experiences and a new culture we can develop respect and love towards each other. By learning about each other, our friendship will build bridges and hopefully close the door on ignorance and open the door to justice and peace.”
Dyma ddyfyniad o Neges 2002:
“Drwy rannu profiadau a diwylliant newydd gallwn ddatblygu parch a chariad at eraill. Wrth ddysgu am ein gilydd byddwn yn pontio ein cyfeillgarwch, yn gobeithio cau bwlch anwybodaeth ac agor drysau cyfiawnder a heddwch.”

These were not just empty words, however.
An exchange took place between young people from Wales and young people from Calcutta, so that they could meet, understand one another’s lives, and share their ideas.
