1 Ask students to fill out the Baseline survey (Q1-4)
Ask students to fill out the Baseline survey (Q1-4). They will complete the second page in Lesson 7 and then First Give will collect the responses. Please point out to students that First Give will collect these surveys at the end of the programme and will analyse the data to gather information about the outcomes of the programme. If the student wishes to remain anonymous they can not fill out their name, and if an individual is unhappy to have the data collected by First Give then they do not have to hand this in.

2 Share Key Learning question with students
Share Key Learning question with students. Students will look at what a social issue is and what kinds of social issues affect our communities before reflecting on their community and what issues exist there that they would like to have a positive impact on.

3 Choose two of the films from the Lesson 1 folder and show them here.

4 Discuss these images with students – what do they represent
Discuss these images with students – what do they represent? Through the discussion lead the students to a definition of a social issue. This is roughly: Social issues are problems that affect some people, or certain groups, in society.

5 Read out the Case Study and ask students to write out the social issues as they are mentioned. Ask students to draw links of cause and effect between the boxes.

6 As a class, brainstorm the social issues in your local area.
There is scope for discussion with your class here around why these social issues exist – which goes back in many cases to inequality. There is also scope to lead into a discussion about the role of government here – what is the government’s role in some of these social issues? How do governments get their money to address these issues (taxation) - which is spent on public services which tries to address some of these issues. However these resources and money is finite. So who steps in? This is where charities can come in.

7 Get students into teams of 4-6 students
Get students into teams of 4-6 students. Ask them to decide upon a top social issue that they think is important to address.

8 There is a back up plan should students become stuck about what to choose.

9 Set small homework task for next lesson.

10 Ask students to turn to the back of the books to page 44 – ask them to tick which professional skills they think they have developed. Share with the rest of the class.
