weathering -- the chemical and physical breakdown of rock exposed to air, moisture, and organic matter.
regolith -- the loose layer of broken rock and mineral fragments on the surface
erosion -- transport of regolith and the wearing down of bedrock by transported particles

mechanical (or physical) weathering dominates in low rainfall cold climate
chemical weathering dominates in high rainfall warm climate

pedocals - rich in calcium carbonate and gypsum, and typical in desert areas
