2. What parents need to know
Supply list for fall is on my webpage. Please only buy what is on the list. We don’t have a lot of extra space.
There is a mandatory 40 minutes of reading each night for homework. There will also be a mandatory homework page to complete for the next day, in order to be successful in ELA.
No other homework is assigned, unless students don’t finish classwork at school. They are given plenty of time to finish.
I do not send home projects for parents to work on.

3. What parents need to know
I will send home conference schedules the third week of school with a date and time for an initial conference.
If you need to schedule another conference with me, please call me at school to schedule one. I am glad to meet with you any time, and will do so before school, during my planning, or after school.
Please don’t ask for extra credit for your child. They are in 5th grade, and should be responsible for ALL their learning by now.
However, extra credit is available 3 times per year. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break. These are packets sent home to help reinforce learning over the longer breaks.

4. Rules for the classroom
Respect others, respect yourself, respect your school.
Be safe. Be kind. Be honest in all you do.
Follow directions quickly, the first time they are given.
Listen when someone else is speaking. You might learn something.
Raise your hand to speak or stand.
These are the basic rules to help us learn how to be a community. We will set the rest of the rules on the first day of school.

5. Parents please sign the following:
All forms in the packet you receive either the first day of school, or at back to school night
Handbook (student must also sign)
Code of conduct (student must also sign)
Computer forms (student must also sign)

6. My Goals:
To give your child the academic and social skills they need to progress to middle school.
To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment.
To help your child make new friends and discover new interests.
To help your child set realistic goals for himself, to be successful this year.
And of course, work toward your child being successful on the FSA, FCAT 2.0 (science), and FSA Writing tests

7. Curriculum:
ELA—We will be using the Engage NY curriculum as our basis for Reading, Language, and Writing. This is very rigorous, so students are going to be challenged in many ways, but reading skills should improve greatly.
We will use iReady to supplement where students need a little extra help
We will also use MobyMax to supplement as well
Math—We will use Eureka Math for 5th grade. We had extraordinary growth using this curriculum in 4th grade. We will work toward having all students at a 6th grade level by the end of the year
We will use Zearn.org to supplement student learning (daily)
We will use MobyMax to supplement as well
We will use Prodigy to supplement math as well

8. Curriculum:
Social Studies—We will be using a new curriculum this year called Studies Weekly. It is a very exciting curriculum, and will be used in other subjects as well.
Science—We will be using Science Fusion again this year. Science will be a tested subject in the spring.

9. Schoology:
I use Schoology every day for class work. Very rarely will you receive papers to bring home. You can log in to your child’s my.desotoschools.com account and see everything your student does.
Students can never “lose” a paper to go home
Students get immediate feedback on how they are doing
Students learn time management, because each test, quiz, etc. is timed according to the amount of time per question on the FSA.

10. Skyward
Skyward is used for your child’s grades. Parents may access Skyward either through your own account in the office, or by using your child’s account information.
Beginning this year, Schoology will post grades directly into Skyward, meaning that it will take even less time for grades to be updated.
All absences are recorded in Skyward. If your child will be absent, please call the school and let the office know your child will not be there.
