Stages of Group Process

Four stages of group work:
1. Initial stage (forming) 2. Transitional stage (storming & norming) 3. Working stage (performing) 4. Final stage (adjourning)

Initial Stage (forming) = Orientation and exploration
Typical experience = varying degrees of anxiety and concern about how you will fit into the group Tasks: • Identify specific goals and expectations of members. Inclusion and identity are important in developing trust and cohesion. Important Behaviors: • Actively listen to each members’ concerns. • Acknowledge thoughts, feelings, ideas.

Transition Stage (storming) = Members typically
jockey for position & establish it. Typical experience = Feelings of competition, rivalry, and division of responsibility. Can be uncomfortable because of conflict. Tasks: • Establish how the group will function. Important Behaviors: • Maintain good communication between members. • Actively listen to each others ideas and concerns. • Treat each other with respect and professionalism.

The storming phase ends with
“norming”, where agreement has been reached about how the group will operate.

Working Stage (performing) = Tasks are
completed and goals are reached. Tasks: • Do the work that needs to be done. • Provide feedback and support about progress. Important Behaviors: • Do work in a timely fashion. • Be prepared for meetings. • Communicate effectively with other members.

Final Stage (adjourning) = Consolidation and
termination. Goals have been met and the process comes to completion. Tasks: • Determine final stages of project work. • Determine final tasks for group members. Important Behaviors: Continue to: • Do work in a timely fashion. • Be prepared for meetings. • Communicate effectively with other members.
