Structure of the Articles of Confederation
rule of law: government officials must follow the law
Magna Carta – king had to follow the laws
English Bill of Rights – King and queen could not make laws on their own. Had to have permission from Parliament. Involved the people of England in the law making process.
enlightenment: emphasized the use of reason to examine old ideas and traditions
constitution: kept rulers from gaining too much power by writing down the rules and duties of the government.
religious freedom: contributed to the idea of freedom of religion, and the right to vote. from VA Statutes of Religious Freedom
right to vote: this way the people feel more equal. Only for white men who paid taxes.
John Locke – there is a social contract between rulers and the people. The rulers get their right to rule from the people.
Baron de Montesquieu – a government that has separate parts.
Declaration of Independence
Colonial documents for government: town meetings, Mayflower Compact, Virginia House of Burgesses.
Congress: congress is now its own branch – the only branch of the National Government
Strong State Governments – they could refuse requests of the National Government (Congress)
Each state got one vote.
Congress: could help settle conflict, so not all the state governments would have to get involved.
Ratification: helped limit power to one person, the power instead went to the people.
