1
Is Baptism necessary? Needed? Essential?
2
Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus said, 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
3
Matthew 28:18- And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
4
First, this commandment is based on Jesus' authority.
Second, it is a fundamental condition for becoming a disciple. Third, Jesus wants everyone in the world to be taught this—all nations. Fourth, clearly everyone needs to understand what Jesus teaches about baptism and commit themselves to observe it the way HE commanded.
5
Religious People do not agree about the Purpose of Baptism
6
"because of" the remission of sins
The Standard Manual for Baptist Churches, (pp. 20,21) "Baptism is not essential to salvation … but it is essential to obedience, since Christ commanded it. It is also essential to membership in the church which is his body"
7
The Handbook of Religious Quotations, p. 6
The Handbook of Religious Quotations, p. 6. quoting Good News, (a Baptist paper) "Is baptism necessary for salvation? I don't beat about the bush about it at all. I come out with a plain, definite, no! No, baptism doesn't save, doesn't help save, and I'll go even further to say that it doesn't have anything in this world to do with the saving of a soul"
8
The Seventh Day Adventist "Baptismal Vow" requires a person, before baptism, to answer this question: "…have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, and do you believe that God, for Christ's sake, has forgiven your sins, and given you a new heart?" –
9
This is standard doctrine in most Protestant churches (though many make no major point concerning baptism at all).
10
What does the Bible say concerning the purpose of baptism?
11
Mark 16:15-16 - He Who Believes and Is Baptized Shall Be Saved
Where does this passage place salvation in relation to baptism? Mark 16: He Who Believes and Is Baptized Shall Be Saved Mark 16:15-16 – “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.”
12
God’s word says there are two things we must do to be saved.
1 + 1 = 2 Belief + Baptism = Salvation + Baptism = Salvation???? Belief = Salvation???? God’s word says there are two things we must do to be saved.
13
The Issue is the difference between the teachings of men and the teachings of the Bible.
2 John 9- “Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.”
14
Acts 2:38 - Repent and Be Baptized for the Remission of Sins
Acts 2:38 - Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
15
what does "for remission of sins" mean?
Some say that "for" (the Greek word is “eis”) means "because of" Matt. 26:28 - for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. Did Jesus shed His blood because sin had already been remitted? Then there was no need for the cross.
16
1 Peter 3:21 - Baptism Saves Us
1 Peter 3:21-Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you — not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience — through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
17
Galatians 3:27 - We Are Baptized into Jesus
Galatians 3: For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
18
Ephesians 1:7 - Forgiveness of sins is in Christ.
2 Timothy 2:10 - Salvation is in Him 1 John 5: Eternal life is in the Son. Ephesians 1:3 - All spiritual blessings are in Christ Romans 8:1 - Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come
19
Romans 6:3 - We Are Baptized into Jesus' Death
Romans 6:3-Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 2 Corinthians 11: For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. His blood.
20
Acts 22:16 – Be Baptized and Wash away Your Sins
Acts 22:16 – “Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.” The man in this story (Saul) had already believed, repented, prayed, confessed that Jesus was Lord… everything so many say one must do to be saved. And yet he was still in his sins and needed to have them washed away by being buried with Christ in baptism.
21
That is why when we read the Bible examples of conversion we never see people postponing baptism.
Acts 2:41 - "That day" 3000 were baptized. Acts 8:36 - "What hinders me from being baptized?" Acts 9:18 - "Immediately … he arose and was baptized" Acts 16:33 - "…the same hour of the night … immediately he and all his family were baptized" Acts 22:16 - "And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins…."
