Earth Systems: The Biosphere & Hydrosphere

The Biosphere The biosphere is the portion of the Earth that is inhabited by life 1. Biosphere- part of Earth where life exists a. Includes all living and non-living parts b. Biota- collection of just living things in biosphere

The Biosphere Earth contains 4 connected systems: -Biosphere -Hydrosphere -Atmosphere -Geosphere

The Hydrosphere The Earth’s liquid water constitutes the hydrosphere.

The Hydrosphere The vast majority of Earth’s water is in the oceans (salt water), with smaller, but geologically important, quantities of fresh water in lakes, rivers, and ground water. Oceans hold ~75% of the Earth’s water

The Hydrosphere The components of the hydrosphere, as well as the cryosphere (frozen water), the atmosphere, and the biosphere, participate in the global hydrologic cycle.

The Hydrologic Cycle (AKA water cycle)

The Hydrologic Cycle (Water Cycle)
The process by which water moves through the Earth and atmosphere

Condensation  process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water (cloud formation)

Transpiration Transpiration is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere.

Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground.

Evaporation Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or vapor
