7 Roosevelt’s Big Stick Diplomacy
In 1901 speech, Roosevelt said, “Speak softly and carry a big stick and you will go far.” Meaning: Always try to work things out peacefully, but do not be afraid to use the “big sticks” of political and , especially, economic power to get things done.

8 Roosevelt’s Policy toward Latin American in the early 1900s
The US should have the right to intervene in the economic matters of Western Hemisphere countries. Monroe Doctrine (1823) warned European nations to stay out of the affairs of South American and Caribbean nations – by 1900 Europeans countries simply ignored the doctrine. Roosevelt wrote the Roosevelt Corollary: It is the right of the US to interfere in any economic matters of any nation in the Americas. It is the right of the US to exercise international police power.

9 Panama Canal Panama is a state of Columbia; but wants independence.
Roosevelt steps in to help, knowing Panama will owe the US big time and he wants to build a canal to shorten the distance traveled by ships from New York to San Francisco Roosevelt uses “big stick” diplomacy by sending both warships and financial assistance for the revolt in exchange for a “canal zone” Took 10 years, but the Panama Canal opens its locks in 1914.
