2 What is the Commitment to Culture?
The “Commitment to Culture” is the outcome of a strategic coaches’ summit held at the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Convention. The summit was in response to reports of the declining culture of soccer in America. Decline of culture: including the United States Men’s National Team failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and various reports of declining participation numbers within the sport.

3 What is the Commitment to Culture?
Coaches representing all levels of the game were assembled to develop a framework of fundamental beliefs that the coaching community collectively supports and strives to achieve The consensus was a commitment to create a unique, positive culture for soccer in America. All levels: pro, college, high school, competitive and recreational The result of the consensus was the Commitment to Culture and the seven cultural cornerstones.

4 The Seven Cornerstones
We Believe… SOCCER UNITES US CHARACTER FIRST THE RULE OF FUN THE GAME IS THE TEACHER WELL-BEING 6. WE ARE FAMILY STRONG 7. SOCCER IS THE PLAYER’S GAME Be sure to hand out the flyer before the presentation, so they have what each of these means in front of them!

5 Why Should We “Commit” to the Culture of Soccer in America?
We are the change agents within our [team, club, organization] that have an effect on the future of soccer in America. By embracing these cornerstones and exemplifying them, we will demonstrate to our players, families and fans a positive change in the culture of the game we love. This will have an impact on our club/organization and the soccer culture in America for generations to come.

6 We are the Change Agents: Now What?
We propose adopting the “Commitment to Culture: Seven Cornerstones” within our club/organization. Through the adoption of these cornerstones, we will: Ask each coach sign the “certificate” of commitment every year Review the cornerstones with players, parents, etc. in person Post the cornerstones on our website and throughout our club/organization, so that all who engage with us understand our culture
