DISEASE Unit C – Science 24
2
What are we studying in this unit . . .
Why do people get sick? (Section 9) How does disease affect society? (Section 10) How do we protect ourselves from disease? (Section 11) Why are our genetics important? (Section 12)
3
What are we studying today…
DISEASE CAUSING MICROBES PATHOGENS BACTERIA VIRUSES PROTISTS FUNGI
4
BACTERIA = Bacteria are everywhere!
They are on your skin, in your mouth, in the air you breathe, and in the food you eat. But they are so small you can’t see them the good side = Lactobacillus
5
staphylococcal orbital cellulitis
the bad side GINGIVITIS – Bacterial Plaque Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain spotted fever) staphylococcal orbital cellulitis STAPH BACTERIA INFECTION
6
What do you think Bacteria needs to grow?
WARM TEMPERATURE FOOD (i.e. SUGAR, FAT) ? YEAST DEMO MOISTURE
7
Viruses AIDS Are much smaller than bacteria.
They reproduce by taking over cells in the body, quickly multiplying and then invading other body cells. AIDS
8
Giardia – which causes Beaver Fever
PROTISTS Are single-celled organisms that share some characteristics with both animals and plants. Some protists cause serious diseases such as: Giardia – which causes Beaver Fever (Named this because Beaver’s often carry the protist that causes nausea, fever, diarrhea, etc.)
9
MALARIA The genus of protist known as Plasmodium causes malaria
Estimated to kill a million people a year in the sub-Saharan Africa.
10
FUNGI Includes molds, yeasts and mushrooms. They cannot make their own food by photosynthesis so they are parasites and can live only on host organisms. the good side
11
FUNGI the bad side ATHLETE’S FOOT RINGWORM
12
So how do these pathogens spread?
GET INTO GROUPS OF 2-3, brainstorm and make a list of as many ways you can think of that pathogens (bacteria, viruses, protists and fungi) can spread
13
Can you fit all of your ideas into these categories
Contact through a wound Airborne Can you fit all of your ideas into these categories Direct Contact Contact with a carrier Water-borne Carried in food
14
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Illnesses that can be spread from one organism to another Illnesses that cannot be spread from one organism to another NON- COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
15
Heart Disease Cancer Flu Meningitis AIDS Cystic Fibrosis Alzheimer's
Decide in a group of 2-3 whether the following are communicable or non-communicable. Heart Disease Cancer Flu Meningitis AIDS Cystic Fibrosis Alzheimer's Down syndrome Botulism Common Cold Malaria Rabies Liver Disease Malnutrition
16
Why do we get non-communicable diseases?
Environment – exposure to pollutants Allergies, cancers, emphysema Diet – poor diets (malnutrition, heart disease) Malnutrition, heart disease, high blood pressure Lifestyle – smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise Cancer, Liver disease, Anorexia, Obesity Genetics – genetic diseases, from your parents Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy
17
SUMMARY QUESTIONS See if you can answer the following:
What is a pathogen? Is AIDS a bacteria, virus, protist or fungi? What is a non - communicable disease? Name 2 ways you can get a communicable disease?
