CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI  Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. Opening Task: Respond in complete sentences using the word in bold in your response. How has high school altered (changed) you? Do your parents respond well to subtle hints about what you want, or do you have to always be explicit and ask them for something directly? Vivid means something that is bright, intense or full of life. Do you think that you have a vivid imagination? Explain. The definition of coming of age refers to the process of growing up or entering into adulthood. An example of coming of age is a novel about a girl going from childhood to adulthood.

4 Literary Element Theme – the underlying main idea of a literary work.
The author’s message about an issue. Theme differs from the subject of a literary work in that it involves a statement or opinion about the subject. For example the subject could be “love” The theme could be “Love will conquer all.”

5 Group Work Read the 10 open-ended questions that a student asked the interviewee. (An interviewee is a person being interviewed.) Based on this interview, what was something that was important to the interviewee? What is a message that you could learn from this interview?
