Rock Cycle Write on the RIGHT Side
2
What processes change rock?
Natural processes make and destroy rock. Three processes that change rock are: Weathering Erosion Deposition
3
Processes that change rock
Weathering Water, wind, ice, and changes in temperature break down rock into fragments called sediment Erosion Sediment is moved from one place to another Deposition Sediments are eventually deposited (or come to rest) in bodies of water and other low-lying areas
5
Other Factors that Change Rock
Temperature and Pressure Rock can be pressed by rock or layers of sediment on top of it. Rock that is located deeper below the Earth’s surface increases in temperature. If pressure and temperature are high enough, the buried rock changes to metamorphic rock.
6
What is the Rock Cycle? Rock Cycle: Series of processes in which rock changes from one type to another
7
Igneous to Sedimentary & Metamorphic
When igneous rock is exposed on Earth’s surface, it may break down into sediment. When this sediment is pressed and cemented, it becomes sedimentary rock While beneath the Earth’s surface, igneous rock can change to metamorphic rock under high temperature and pressure
8
Sedimentary to Metamorphic & Igneous
When pressure and temperature changes, sedimentary rock may become metamorphic rock or it may melt to form igneous rock
9
Metamorphic to Igneous & Sedimentary
Under certain temperature and pressure, metamorphic rock will melt and form magma, which can cool to form igneous rock. Metamorphic rock can be broken down by weathering and erosion to form sediment that forms sedimentary rock

Draw the Rock Cycle On the next slide is a picture of the rock cycle. Draw and label the diagram of the rock cycle in your journal. If you do not have enough room, draw your diagram on the next page. Don’t forget to label what is happening at each arrow! Color your picture when you are done. I recommend you color code the arrows, just like in the picture

Reflection Turn to page 78 in your textbook. Cut out the diagram of the rock cycle and glue it in your journal on the left side
