1 Scenario 1 Three weeks ago, I bought myself a video game console. Unfortunately, it is no longer working. The box says the product carries a one-year warranty.

2 Is the merchant required to replace it?
Yes, the merchant is required to replace an item that becomes defective within 30 days after purchase. No, but the merchant is obligated to repair it at no charge. No, because the obligation to replace an item is valid for only 10 days after purchase. The obligation of the merchant is to repair the good without charge. However, you must go over of the content of the guarantee, as some merchants do not assume certain costs, such as transportation costs. Of course, some merchants still offer to replace the good.

3 Scenario 2 The computer I bought myself last year no longer works and the one-year warranty has just expired. I have to pay almost $700 to repair it, because I didn't buy the extended warranty.

4 Is there a way to have it repaired at no cost?
Yes, since the "reasonable period of time" for the computer has not elapsed. No, because the warranty is no longer in force. Yes, if it cost more than $1,000. They are warranties provided for by the Consumer Protection Act. They apply automatically and free of charge whenever you purchase or lease goods from a merchant. A legal warranty ensures, among other things, that the purchased item: • is durable for a reasonable length of time; and  • can be used... for its intended use!   The Act prescribes that goods must be durable in normal use for a reasonable length of time,  compared to identical or the same type of goods. Certain factors may affect what is a reasonable time for an item to last: • the price; • the terms of the contract (e.g. the purchased item is used); • how the item is used. If your item is defective or cannot be used for the purpose for which it is ordinarily intended... Notify the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. The choice is up to you! The merchant or manufacturer could then: repair the item or have it repaired free of charge; exchange it; reimburse you.
