1 The Righteousness of God

2 Broad outline of the Gospel Jesus is Lord
INTRODUCTION 1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, Romans 1:1–5 (NASB95) Broad outline of the Gospel Jesus is Lord Man must respond in obedient faith

3 INTRODUCTION Shame is a tempting response
Sacrifice always has and always will be a part of the service of God “…the power of God for salvation” For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16 (NASB95)

4 THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD
INTRODUCTION For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (NASB95) THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD How is Paul using this phrase (1:17, 3:5, 3:21,22, 10:3) What is the connection between verse 16 and 17? What is meant by “the righteous man shall live by faith”?

5 The Righteousness of God
WHY THE QUESTION? Romans is essentially a “legal” defense of the Gospel Paul uses this precise phrase at important junctures in the letter Whatever is meant by this phrase is essential to our understanding of the message of Romans as well as our approach to the Gospel For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (NASB95)

6 The Righteousness of God
Revealed through the Gospel Requires faith Results in being just or righteous For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (NASB95)

7 The Righteousness of God
For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. Romans 10:3 (NASB95) Not God’s absolute righteousness Fully revealed in the Old Testament (Ex 3:4-5; Is 6:3) Faith is not required for this fact to be true.  This fact alone does not justify man

8 The Righteousness of God
Not imputation of God’s righteousness The apostolic mission was to bring about the “obedience of faith” “the just shall live by faith.”  Inconsistent with the idea of a practicing sinner simply having God’s personal righteousness imparted to them. through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, Romans 1:5 (NASB95)

9 The Righteousness of God
The means by which God makes men righteous Contrasted with condemnation under the Law – Rom 3:21 Available to all men – Rom 3:22 Those who reject it cannot be saved – Rom 10:3, 3:5 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (NASB95)

10 The Righteousness of God
“the just shall live by faith” Justification is found by grace through faith - Rom 3:21-24 The same means of salvation God has always utilized – Rom 4:4-12 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (NASB95)
