2 About The Giver Title: The Giver Author: Lois Lowry
Publisher: Bantam Books Copyright Date: 1993 About The Giver

3 Summary The main character, Jonas, lives within an isolated community that shuns negative memories and emotions. Anything depicting negative actions is censored and punished. It is revealed that there exist other communities that may or may not share the mentality of the one we are reading about. One visiting group acted like animals to the community despite them not even knowing what animals are. The Giver is a title given to those that hold the memories of the community. Jonas is chosen to be the next one and we follow his path as we treads new fronts.

4 Setting Where did it happen? How about when?
In a small community. It is revealed later on that there exist other gated communities through communication with them is extremely limited… this place sounds familiar...Kim Jong Un! In the future. Not so far off that it is distant, but clearly enough time has passed to develop technology that can directly change the human psychology.

5 Main Characters Jonas The Giver Asher
Jonas is the new receiver in his community. With the help of the giver he attempts to free the community by leaving, and giving everyone the memories. He is an older man who leads Jonas on a path to help free the memories that he has. The best friend of Jonas. Even though he does not understand what is going on he helps give Jonas the courage to leave.

6 The conflict is one of, at first, internal conflict where Jonas must decide whether he can handle being the giver. This conflict evolves into him going against the values of his emotionless community and running away. Conflict

7 He ran off and as the distance between he and the community grew the memories of everyone came flooding back. Solution

8 Meaning The meaning is something that is left up to the reader. You can interpret this as purely a work of fiction meant to be enjoyed, or something deeper. We feel that the message is one of embracing your emotions and past. Be they good or bad, painful or joyful. It could also be an allegory for censorship going so far as to censor individuals’ minds.

9 Photo Montage The apple represents the black of the world, quite literally, and how the character begins to see color. The snaky thing is a memory which the book revolves around. The city shows the monochrome world which the community lives. The escape picture is to show the true nature of the community and its dystopian nature.

11 The Giver By Lois Lowry Justus -
This novel was fantastic. It was filled with excitement, plot twist, and more. It was an intriguing read, I could not set the book down till it was done. I would recommend this book to any reader. Ps. I said so, so read it. Nick - I thought this book was exceptional because it offers a good view of what it would be like if everything was the same. I would recommend this book to people older than 8 years of age. Chandler - I think that the book is a very good one overall. I finished the book in one go because it pulled me in it was really intriguing. Gary - The giver is an excellent example of a literary work that conveys a message of acceptance of one’s inner struggles with emotions. It portraits a community, one that may be unique or there may be many others like it, that shun negative imagery. This provides both a different and interesting perspective of human nature that not many books explore. I encourage anyone and everyone to read it purely for the experience, and all schools should make this novel a requirement. The Giver By Lois Lowry
