1 Body Building “A Recipe”

2 CARBOHYDRATES Your BODY’S main SOURCE of ENERGY
SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES (Glucose) Glucose stores SMALL amounts of ENERGY but it is the PREFERRED energy SOURCE! Found in FOODS like fruits and vegetables Protein COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES (Starches) Starches store LARGE amounts of energy and are Found in foods like Bread, Potatoes, Pasta, etc… General Shape: 1 Hexagon A series of Hexagons bonded together

3 PROTEIN (aka POLYPEPTIDES)
Your body is MADE of and USES 1000s of different protein molecules. Each protein molecule has its OWN: SIZE SHAPE STRUCTURE FUNCTION You MUST consume protein on a daily basis because your body CANNOT store it. Protein Foods that contain PROTEIN include: FISH EGGS NUTS (peanuts, soy nuts, etc…) RED MEATS POULTRY General Shape: Contains 2 or more atoms of N

4 In GENERAL, LIPIDS come in 2 FORMS:
Fats (aka LIPIDS or TRIGLYCERIDES) LIPIDS store MASSIVE amounts of energy but are NOT the PREFERRED energy source. So extra FAT is STORED! In GENERAL, LIPIDS come in 2 FORMS: SATURATED (solid fats) Found in foods that come from ANIMALS! Ex- beef, butter, cheese, etc… UNSATURATED (liquid fats) Found in foods that come from PLANTS Ex- Olive Oil, Peanut Oil, Corn Oil, etc…. TRANS FATS are Unsaturated Fats that have been chemically changed so they WILL be solid (margarine, etc…) General Shape: SATURATED UNSATURATED

5 Respiratory System which must be moist or breathing would be painful
water Water helps process and deliver the nutrients from the food we eat to our cells and… helps eliminate waste products from these cells. • Muscle – 75% • Fat – 20% • Blood – 83% • Bones – 22% • Heart – 80-90% • Lung – 80-90% • Brain – 75% Protein Sweating Excretory Functions Respiratory System which must be moist or breathing would be painful The average adult must replace the ~10 cups (80 oz) of water it loses each day through… General Shape:

6 Your cells know what to do with these food molecules because of…..
Nucleic acids Like DNA DNA is the hereditary molecule INSIDE your cells which you inherited from your parents. Your DNA holds the VITAL instructions needed for taking all the MOLECULES you consume FATS, CARBS, PROTEINS and WATER and BUILDING your BODY! Your DNA builds you ACCORDING to YOUR instructions…that’s why we are ALL so DIFFERENT Protein General Shape:
