4 DTU LINX Project – Facts and Figures
Type of Facility / Project: Network containing 3 Danish universities, The technical university of Denmark, Copenhagen University and Aarhus University and 13 industry partners (Large, medium and small). Focus on X-ray and Neutron use for material development. Characteristics of User Program: Use of local equipment and commercial access to large scale facilities, access through other programs like SINE2020 Information of Industrial Usage i.e. proprietary or via public access % Practical information: LINX association Imaging branch – DTU:

5 Industrial Use – What is offered ?
Present principal Use Cases: LINX has so far 6 areas which are in focus: Colloid materials, Sorption of liquids and humidity, Fiber structure and dynamics, Materials at operating and processing conditions and Quality Assurance All subprojects are defined by industry partners Smaller subprojects are days of manpower, bigger subprojects around 100days Prerequisites for Industrial Users The motivation is many fold: 1) Denmark has defined a ESS strategy creating 5 to 7 scientific centres of excellence and creating a nation industry portal (one shop place) 2) For 3D Imaging Center at DTU industry contract are imported for different reasons such as collaboration on student projects, interesting applied science. Reporting is an issue when connected to companies R&D projects, delays have to be announced in due time. WHAT do we offer for industry ? The need for individual methods with their required performance shall be discussed but also how industry or non-facility partners (mediators, networks, universities)  could be involved to establish or improve the methodological offer. What are the criteria to make a method attractive to industry and what is the adequate access scheme? Beyond a single method, packaging several methods and ensuring standardisation / accreditation could be relevant to establish a (new) analytical tool. Is there a need to report the results or the experience e.g. enable targeted method development? How can such developments be done with minimum interruption of (public) user time. 

6 Industrial Use – How is it offered ?
Motivation and goals for industrial use: Input from an non Facility (DTU) Most public Danish funding agencies are now encouraging company involvement in the research proposals. DTU has four main pillars in strategy, Education, Research, Research based consultancy and Innovation. Administrative aspects We see the IP question as one of the main issues to be addressed. HOW do we offer it to industry and WHAT is to be achieved ? This working group is intended to discuss rather administrative than technical / methodological aspects: How do we encourage industrial use as part public access (proposal system) and are their specific selection criteria in place (technological innovation , scientific excellence). How do we set-up contracts incl. fees and IP for proprietary research. How to consolidate these potentially competing usage of (the same) beam time. Can we establish success criteria to measure the impact of industrial usage e.g. improving the innovation potential. 

7 Industrial Use – Availability and Marketing
Knowledge about the Offer LINX association will offer training programs for industries, training to be run by universities. More training is needed but in the context of the company use and not the analysis tool. Example. In Fibre composites the fibre orientation is a parameter for properties, but the output of the analysis should fit into the existing tools at the companies. Knowledge network, not only technique or tropic specific. Example, corrosion problem (metal, chemical, diffraction, imaging) Marketing I think the best way of creating awareness is though students that will go and work in the companies. In the LINX project 20% of total funding is dedicated to outreach HOW do we sell it or make it available ? To realise leverage, to target it to specific use cases and to integrate neutrons as part of a tool kit both networks and mediator companies come into play. Should facility actions aim for strengthening these stakeholders with (i) training activities for industry / mediators / networks / universities / hubs (topical, regional) / other facilities and (ii) special commercial offers or ways of access.

8 Industrial Use – Project Execution

Sustainability 5 years funding aim is to be sustainable Very much on local equipment and facilities are used when needed. HOW to execute an industrial project at the facility?   What are the incentives for the  scientists involved. Are additional resources required / available and in which area. How is specific equipment been provided and available for further usage?
