I Can… Differentiate between static and dynamic characters.
Identify and analyze both direct and indirect characterization. (9-10.RL.KID.3)
5
Direct Characterization
DEFINITION: writer TELLS the audience the personality of a character; the description actually is IN THE TEXT. EXAMPLE: “‘Ivan is an incredibly strong fellow,’ remarked the general, ‘but he has the misfortune to be deaf and dumb. A simple fellow, but, I’m afraid, like all his race, a bit of a savage.’ “ Real Life Example: Dating Websites and Obituaries
6
Indirect Characterization
DEFINITION: The writer SHOWS the audience the personality of a character. The description may be implied but NOT STATED, so the reader must infer!
7

Before We Read… Let’s Watch a Little
/watch?v=UqC6ARhS_H8 20:25-27:27 Construct a chart listing nouns and adjectives that describe Odysseus, Odysseus’s men, and the Cyclops as we watch this video segment and are introduced to this episode in Homer’s epic. Odysseus Odysseus’s Men The Cyclops Cunning Scared Cannibal Pause Points for Discussion: Ask students to predict why Odysseus takes the wine with him. Ask students how Odysseus’s initial behavior on the island compares/contrasts with his leadership on the island of the Cicones. How would you describe Odysseus based on this shift in behavior. At 24:34 ask if the Cyclops’ being offended is warranted? Why? Do we need to take the customs of the time in which the story is set into consideration? At 25:50, ask students what they would do in this situation? What are the obstacles Odysseus and his men have to navigate? What about Odysseus makes you think he might be able to come up with a way out of such a touchy situation?

Let’s discuss your findings!
