Completing the Square x2 + 12x + 6 = 0 A Method of Factoring
Try to create a Perfect Square Trinomial a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2 a2 - 2ab + b2 = (a - b)2 Check to see if it is a Perfect Square Trinomial If Not... 1. Get C on Right Side of Equation. 2. Divide B by 2 and Square it. 3. Add this number to both sides. 4. Create Perfect Square Trinomial. 5. Undo Squaring. 6. Get x by itself. x2 + 12x + 6 = 0 A must be a 1. If it is not, divide everything in the problem by A to get the value of A to be a 1.
4
Example: x2 - 12x + 5 = 0
5
Example: x2 + 8x + 28 = 0
6
Example: A ≠1 5x2 + 20x = 40
7
Example: A ≠1 2x2 + x = 6
