1 Spinning the Web of Life
Content Objective: Students will create a Food Web from their own daily food consumption Language Objective: Students will demonstrate understanding of Food Webs by drawing a food web with their group

2 Spinning the Web of Life
In your Journal, create your groups ideal menu for 1 day. Include snacks as well as meals.

3 Spinning the Web of Life
Make a 3 column chart in your journal. List the foods from your groups ideal menu in the 1st column List the ingredients in each menu item in the 2nd column. Example: A piece of cake would list oil, flour, sugar, butter, eggs and milk.

4 Spinning the Web of Life
In the 3rd column of your chart list the sources for the ingredients of each menu item Example: Write wheat next to flour, sugar cane or sugar beet next to sugar, and chicken next to egg.

Create another 3 column chart In the 2nd column (center), list all of the animals that appeared in your 1st chart. For every animal that you have listed list several food that it eats in the 3rd column Example: Next to cow you would list the grass and corn that cattle eat

In the 1st column, next to the animals in column 2, record 2 animals that might eat each animal. Example: Next to cow you might list wolf, bear, mountain lion or human

On the White Board create 5 equal sized sections List all the names of the plant in the bottom section Write the names of all the herbivores (plant eaters) in the next section above the plants Write all the names of the Omnivores in the section above the herbivores Write all of the names of the Carnivores in the Top section

Draw arrows from the organisms that provide energy to the organisms that receive energy. Example: You would draw an arrow from grass to cattle with point of the arrow aimed at the cattle. Draw your groups food web into your journal

10 Spinning the Web of Life
Use the reading to discuss with your group the following questions. Record your answers in your Journal: What is then key difference between the way producers and consumers obtain energy and matter from their ecosystem. Why is there no predator in Africa that lives by eating only Lions and Leopards? What effect are cattle and other domesticated livestock having on certain ecosystems?

Analysis Questions Describe how Energy flows through the Community, as shown in your food web(Use the 10% rule in your discussion) Where is the most Energy available in your food web?. Explain your answer.
