2 Welcome to IB History of the Americas!

3 2 Year Course Broken down into two sections-Higher Level and Standard Level. Standard level is at least 150 hours of instructional time. Higher level is 240 In most cases both courses consist of the same educational aims, core syllabus and curriculum and assessment models. HL courses typically also include a range of additional elements designed to allow students to explore areas of interest within the subject in more depth. In this sense, SL courses are not watered down versions of their HL counterparts.

8 Activity Break Write down a question and pass it to the next person to answer. The question can be about ANYTHING! So make it fun! DON’T PUT YOUR NAME ON IT. Once everyone has gone around the room and answered ALL questions, I will select the best questions and answers to share with the class.

9 How do we study history? Think about historical research and how we evaluate sources. Research two different methods of researching history and think about how these different methods impact the way we view history! How do you take notes? Why is citing important? Why does it help us?

How will the TYPE of history being written impact the information about it and the way we view it?

11 Styles/Methods of History
Chronology - based on sequential order, focus on cause-effect relationships Critical Source Based - focused on assessing different perspectives of an issue Autobiographical - Focuses on autobiographies, what the person said him/herself, how that person impacted an event. (significance) Political - The impact leaders, laws, policies, international relationships have on events and vice versa Cultural - How has culture been impacted/shaped by events, AND how culture has impacted those events Economic - how the economy relates to events/policies/leadership and vice versa Technology - How technology impacts events and vice versa

In short, you look foolish when you don’t give credit where its due.

13 Occam’s Razor guiding principle in writing history - the answer with the fewest assumptions should be selected.

14 Historical Method How do we study history? Through 3 steps.
Step 1: Heuristic-Identify the RELEVANT sources of information, ones that Directly relate to your topic Step 2: Criticism-Critically evaluate the sources for accuracy and integrity and take notes on it. (What skill is this?) Step 3: Synthesis and Exposition-Organize the information (notes) from your various sources to answer the research question

15 Activity: Steps 1-3 are carried out through OPVCL
Origin Purpose Value Content Limitation *Read the following guide and example before we go ahead and practice on some sources. You will complete the OPVCL paragraph format for each source on a separate sheet of paper to turn in at the very end of class.

16 Activity: IB Rubrics Now HOLD ON TO THE IB RUBRIC THAT I HAVE PASSED ON. You will need this for the whole year. Assess how you did on your OPCVL synthesis paragraph. Mark it according to the rubric.

17 2-3 papers to write at the end of this course.
Everyone write the historical investigation paper. SL: Paper 1 and 2. HL: Paper 1-3. YOU WILL PRACTICE A LOT OF WRITING IN THIS COURSE. Now look at the grading rubric that I handed out yesterday. Notice the details within each mark band.

18 Think Pair Share What are the IB Command Terms and why are they important? Practice constructing a question using an IB command term. Come up with 3 questions. Look at sample IB Paper I Questions and discuss what the question is asking you to do…(partner work).

19 Writing for IB Essays All IB papers require students to:
1. Knows the material 2. Understands and deconstructs the question. 3. Is organized 4. Written with nuance and clarity.

20 Practice Using the Essay grading rubric, figure out what you would give that paper and explain why.

21 Paper 1-The Move to Global War
Look at the template and question breakdown for paper 1. This is always what it looks like.

22 Paper 1 This is the document based section of the test. It focuses on the military expansion of Japan, Italy and Germany from You will be given four documents, one will be a visual (picture, poster, political cartoon etc.). You will have four questions as follows: Question 1: Knowledge (5 marks total) Broken up into two separate questions, you will have to use the documents to answer a straightforward question. However many marks it is worth will be the number of points you should make Question 2: Synthesis (4 Marks) This is an OPCVL of one of the sources. You do not get to choose the source, it tells you which one to evaluate Question 3: Application (6 Marks) This is a compare and contrast of two sources. Be sure to make a minimum of four solid connections (preferably 2 similarities and 2 differences) but you should shoot for SIX connections. Be sure to: (1) state the general connection (2) give evidence from each source to support the connection and use compare/contrast terms. Question 4: Historical Skills (9 Marks) This is a mini essay question. You should use ALL of the sources in your answer and refer to them in your answer as Source A...Source B… etc. You will also need to include any outside knowledge you have on the topic and blend it with the information you use from the sources.
