Wherever you find the word “it,” make sure the author has said what ‘it’ is. Make sure there is NOT more than one “and” in a sentence. This often indicates a run-on; even if not, it is overused. Circle misspelled words. Read the paper aloud and mark places that are awkward in any way. Mark sentence fragments and run-ons. Have you used: sentences starting with a verb? Semi-colons? The dash? Short sentences for emphasis? Parallel structure? Do verbs stay in the same tense? Does EVERY SINGLE DETAIL contribute to the point? What needs to be added/taken away? Does the introduction capture your attention? If not, offer suggestions to the author. Does the conclusion leave you satisfied OR are you bored? Offer suggestions to the author.
