2 Aims Propogate Hitler’s Weltanschauung- and through this become members of the Volksgemeinschaft ‘The sharpest weapon in maintaining and building up the state’ (Goebbels) Repression- Propaganda- welded together the political attitudes of the nation

3 Methods ‘It is not enough for people to be more
or less reconciled to our regime…. rather we want to work on people until they have capitulated to us….until they grasp ideologically what is happening is not an end in itself, but a means to an end’ (Goebbels- 1933)

4 Methods RMVP- notice the polycratic nature of ministry, Reich Chamber of Culture and Nazi Party propaganda office Most important- radio and the press Broadcasting brought under Reich control- Reich Radio company Press gradually taken over by Nazi publishing house- Eher Verlag Staff- ‘coordinated’- many dismissed on racial / political grounds

5 Success? Attitudes How much are people’s attitudes a result of propaganda- or a result of other factors- other policies, repression Propaganda can help us explain part of the reason why popularity increased in Weimar Germany Need to look at the different strands of Propaganda- e.g. much success in creating support for Hitler Strengthened anti-Semitism? Counter- productive against the Church Propaganda as reinforcer of attitudes rather than countering attitudes Probably didn’t succeed in delivering Hitler’s Weltanschauung- neither did it create a Volksgemeinschaft
