All Rights Reserved. www.schoolnutrition.org Serving Locally Grown Produce Start small – menu seasonal fruits/veggies –Apple –Pumpkin More complex – switch out ingredients from an existing recipe. –Carrots or cabbage in Coleslaw Get ambitious – serve a new recipe from locally grown foods –Buffalo and Wild Rice Casserole

All Rights Reserved. www.schoolnutrition.org Try Something New Take a field trip to a: Local Farm Urban Farm Pumpkin Patch Apple Orchard Farmers Market … Or, if you cant go to the farmer, have him come and talk to your students. Hold a pumpkin carving or potato decorating contest.

Get your students to create posters of the Farm to School items you are serving. Find out what foods grow in your region and create a display.

Grow Something: Lima beans in a bag or basil and parsley in pots. Dress up as a farmer or get your students to wear a color representing a different fruit/veggie each day.

All Rights Reserved. www.schoolnutrition.org Promote Your Locally Sourced Foods Highlight the food on the menu Include signs on the serving line and posters in the cafeteria Have free samples on the line (Give out stickers to elementary students if they try the new food.) When serving the new food, invite the farmer to come and talk about how and where it is grown Work with teachers to make the new foods a unit of study Send a letter or email home to parents and also contact the PTA
