1
Lesson Starter IN YOUR OWN WORDS, write down the meaning of the word displacement and give and example of a displacement reaction.
2
Learning Intention To learn what an ore is
To extract a metal using heat and carbon
3
Discovering metals Unreactive metals discovered first
Unreactive- uncombined- pure Nuggets
4
Discovering metals More reactive metals combined with other elements
Ores
5
Extracting metal Different ways
More reactive the metal- more energy needed to separate it Not very reactive- heat alone Metals like zinc and iron extracted by heating in presence of carbon
6
Experiment AIM To extract copper from copper oxide
7
Apparatus 1 test tube Copper oxide Charcoal (carbon)
Large beaker of cold water Bunsen burner Filter funnel Metal tongs
8
Method Place 1 spatula of copper oxide and 1 spatula of charcoal in the test tube Mix thoroughly Heat with blue flame After 5 mins plunge test tube into beaker of water that is inside a sink- CAREFUL Filter the solid out of the beaker of water and sift through the solid to look for signs of copper Write a short report including an AIM, diagram of the experiment and a description of what happened
9
Lesson Starter What metals would you find un-combined in the earth?
What is a metal ore? Briefly describe how copper was extracted from copper oxide
10
Extracting metals More reactive metals= much stronger bonds
More energy needed Most reactive metals- electricity Electroylsis
11
Experiment Collect electrolysis kit and copper chloride solution
Connect equipment- get it checked before switching on the power Record any observations about what is happening at each electrode Draw a diagram in the space provided
12
Revision- acids, alkali, metal
