Special Penalty Enforcements: Kick Catching Interference
Free Kicks Out Of Bounds PSK

AS FAR AS TIMING IS CONCERNED THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF FOULS THAT HAPPEN DURING A GAME :
1 DEAD BALL FOULS 2 LIVE BALL FOULS and occasionally and far less frequently 3 LIVE BALL FOULS TREATED LIKE DEAD BALL FOULS (UNSPORTSMANLIKE FOULS ONLY ) We will deal with these later
4
Let's Start With Easy DEAD BALL FOULS
5
On the Offense or the Defense
DEAD BALL FOULS : On the Offense or the Defense Happen PRIOR to the snap or AFTER the ball is declared dead after a whistle or dead by rule. THEY ARE BEFORE OR AFTER A PLAY !
6
DEAD BALL FOULS PRIOR TO THE SNAP are enforced from the PREVIOUS SPOT
Obviously these can be : False Start Offense Encroachment Defense Snap Infractions Substitution Infractions Delay of Game Any Others ? Formation fouls, Illegal Shifts , Illegal Participation fouls are LIVE BALL FOULS ...WHY ?
7
These Could Be: Late Hits Hit Out Of Bounds Personal Fouls
DEAD BALL FOULS AFTER THE PLAY are enforced from the spot where the ball ended up at the end of the play THE SUCCEEDING SPOT ! These Could Be: Late Hits Hit Out Of Bounds Personal Fouls ON EITHER TEAM YOU TACK THEM ON DEFENSE FOULS OR TAKE THEM BACK ON OFFENSE FROM THE END OF THE PLAY THE SUCCEEDING SPOT !
8
DEAD BALL Fouls can be now as of 2015 offset
DEAD BALL Fouls can be now as of 2015 offset . One on the Offense one on the Defense they NOW offset ! You cannot offset a dead ball foul on one team with a live ball foul from the other team. The live ball foul will be enforced first before the dead ball foul !
9
NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT LIVE BALL FOULS
10
A LOOSE BALL PLAY A RUNNING PLAY
LIVE BALL FOULS happen AFTER THE SNAP UNTIL THE BALL IS DEAD BY WHISTLE OR BY RULE. They happen during either : A RUNNING PLAY Pretty simple a play where we have a ball carrier ! or A LOOSE BALL PLAY Loose Ball Plays are primarily PASS PLAYS but also KICKS are always loose ball plays. Fumbles BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE are LOOSE BALL PLAYS . Anything not a RUNNING PLAY IS A LOOSE BALL PLAY ! We will get more in depth on this later ....
11
FOULS ON LIVE BALL RUN PLAYS AND THEIR ENFORCEMENTS AS THEY'RE EASY !
Let's Look At FOULS ON LIVE BALL RUN PLAYS AND THEIR ENFORCEMENTS AS THEY'RE EASY !
12
DEFENSIVE PENALTIES ON RUN PLAYS
Let's start with RUN PLAYS as they are easy to enforce ! ALL DEFENSIVE PENALTIES ON RUN PLAYS ARE TACKED ON TO THE END OF THE RUN ! EVEN ON TOUCHDOWNS they are tacked try or kickoff. If the offense has first and ten from the A10 yard line and they run for five yards to the A15 ...and there is a defensive penalty for defensive slap to the head of an offensive lineman at the line of scrimmage the A what is the next down and distance ? Remember run play ...penalty on the defense...TACKED ON THE END OF THE RUN ! First and ten A at the A30 yard line a 15 yard penalty tacked on from the end of the run the A15
13
THE SPOT OF THE FOUL IF THE FOUL IS BEHIND THE END OF THE RUN
OFFENSIVE PENALTIES ON RUNNING PLAYS ARE ENFORCED FROM THE END OF THE RUN IF THE PENALTY IS IN ADVANCE OF THE END OF THE RUN or THE SPOT OF THE FOUL IF THE FOUL IS BEHIND THE END OF THE RUN This is referred to as THE ALL BUT ONE PENALTY ENFORCEMENT
14
( The runner may not have got this far without the hold ) or
PLAY : First and ten for the offense at the A 30 yard line. A Running Back runs 7 yards and is tackled at therefore the A 37. FOUL :There is a hold by the Offensive Guard at the A32 yard line behind the end of the run. What is the next down and distance ? ( The runner may not have got this far without the hold ) or FOUL: There is a hold by the Offensive Guard at the A 39 yard line in advance of the end of the run. What is the next down and distance ? ( The runner got this far with the hold in advance of him )
15
The All But One Foul On The Offense !
Think of it this way...the OFFENSE probably wouldn't have gained the yardage they got on the run play had it not been for that hold way behind the end of the run !
16
Which Penalties On The Offense Cause A Loss Of Down ?
ALMOST ALL LIVE BALL PENALTIES GIVE THE OFFENSE A RIGHT TO REPEAT THE SAME DOWN THEY JUST PLAYED AFTER THE PENALTY IS ENFORCED ! Which Penalties On The Offense Cause A Loss Of Down ? What about Defensive Penalties That Cause Automatic First Downs ?
17
Penalties on the Defense when the Offense scores a touchdown are still enforced on the Try or Succeeding Kick Off ! Offense scores a touchdown on a pass play, the Defense committed Defensive Pass Interference, that penalty is still enforced !
18
Can we have a play that has a RUNNING PLAY AND A LOOSE BALL PLAY ON THE SAME DOWN ?
YES ! All Run Plays from BEHIND the line of scrimmage that preceded Loose Ball Plays become part of the LOOSE BALL PLAY ! FROM BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE ONLY !
19
All Plays Each And Every Play In A Game End With A Run Play Except Which Two Plays ?
20
All non kick plays except incomplete passes end up with a run.
If you have a pass play you have : A Run Play from the snap to the QB throw then a LOOSE BALL PLAY at the throw , but once the ball is caught by a receiver WE HAVE A RUN PLAY AGAIN . (Run before the throw becomes part of loose ball play BEHIND the line of scrimmage) If a foul happens either before or during the pass it is a LOOSE BALL PREVIOUS SPOT PENALTY ! If the foul happens after the catch by the receiver YOU HA HAVE A RUN PLAY THE PENALTY IS TAKEN FROM THE END OF THE RUN !
21
ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW IS :
Was the foul during a LOOSE BALL ( PREVIOUS SPOT ) or a RUN PLAY ( END OF RUN ) ? Was the foul on the team with the ball on a RUN PLAY , if so , was it behind the end of the run ?
22
Run Through The Foul When Reporting A Live Ball Foul :
1WHO was the foul on ? 2 WHAT Was The Foul For ? 3 WHEN Did The Foul Occur ? 4 WHERE Was The Foul Committed ? 2
23
DOUBLE FOULS If you have one or more live ball fouls on the offense and one or more live ball fouls on the defense THEY OFFSET REPLAY THE DOWN !
24
Are two or more live ball fouls on one team and none on the other.
MULTIPLE FOULS Are two or more live ball fouls on one team and none on the other. Let's say the Offense has an Illegal Shift and a Block In The Back in advance of the end of the run. The defense has an option to take NONE OR ONE OF THE TWO LIVE BALL FOULS THE ONE THAT BENEFITS THEM THE MOST !
25
RUN PLAY BEFORE LOOSE BALL BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE :
When a QB takes a snap and steps backwards BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE we have a RUN PLAY ! If he throws the ball it's now a LOOSE BALL PLAY and the RUN BEHING PLAY BEFORE THAT BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE BECAME PART OF THE RUN PLAY ! Therefore you don't have to bean bag behind the line of scrimmage !
26
ADVANCED PENALTY ENFORCEMENTS
27
CLEAN HANDS If a team on change of possession usually a defense gets the ball and commits a foul afterwards they get to keep the ball and the penalty is enforced from the end of the run, or from the spot if it's behind the end of the run !
28
THIS IS KNOWN AS THE DEFENSE NOT GETTING THE BALL WITH
IF THE DEFENSE GAINS POSSESSION AND HAS COMMITTED A FOUL BEFORE DOING SO ...GENERALLY THE OFFENSE WILL ACCEPT THE PENALTY AND RETAIN THE BALL ! THIS IS KNOWN AS THE DEFENSE NOT GETTING THE BALL WITH " CLEAN HANDS "
29
If The Offense Commits a penalty in its own end zone we have a safety or if the end of the run is in the offensive end zone and the offense commits a penalty we have a safety. WHY ? Run play penalized from the end of the run !
30
If the Defense commits a penalty in the Offensive end zone and the play results in what would have been a safety then the penalty is enforced from the Goal Line as the end of the run is in the End Zone.
