1. Round Character- many characteristics and details developed
2. Flat Character- only one characteristic or detail developed
3. Static- character stays the same; no development or change
4. Dynamic- character changes; possibly experiences growth

4. Flat Round Wednesday, Sept. 7
1. Draw a two-dimensional, flat picture of a house. You can only see one side of it. You cannot see three of the four sides. This is how a flat character is; you can only see a few elements of the character. There are many things you cannot “see,” or many details you are not given by the author. Label the as FLAT.

1. Imagine a stick of dynamite. What does dynamite do? How is that similar to a dynamic character?
2. Imagine a TV with static reception. What are you viewing? How is that similar to a static character?

7. Friday, September 9 Dude, it’s reading time!
Think about Charlie in “Flowers for Algernon.” Have the answers to any of these questions changed from the beginning of the story? In 2-3 sentences, explain if/how there has been a change.
How does the character feel about him/her/itself?
How does the character act towards others?
What is the character’s goal?

Round or Flat? As a reader, judge whether or not the character is round or flat by trying to write down characteristics of the character.
Answer the question: What do you know about the character? If your list is long, with many characteristics, then the character is round. If your list is short, or there are not many characteristics at all, then the character is flat.
