10 review Mood is a feeling or an emotion created through art, music and literature. In Literature, mood is created through figurative language (“Death in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow…”), plot and setting (“…so, by degrees, very gradually – I made up my mind to take the life of the old man.” “…at the dead hour of night…”) and Descriptive details or Actions (“One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture; a dull blue with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow of my bones.”)

11 You Try Read, “Black Forest,” on your note sheet.
Underline and label figurative language found in the poem. You should be able to find similes, metaphors and personification. Determine the mood that has been created through the use of figurative language and record on your note sheet.

13 Tone is the author’s attitude toward the topic.
Objective Tone – is impartial. It does not show any feelings for or against a topic. (Textbook) Subjective Tone – personal, biased, emotional and often informal.

14 The following statements each express different attitudes about a shabby apartment. Six different tones are used: optimistic, bitter, tolerant, sentimental, humorous and objective. The place may be shabby, but since both of my children were born while we lived here, it has a special place in my heart. This isn’t the greatest apartment in the world, but it’s not really that bad. If only there were some decent jobs out there, I wouldn’t be reduced to living in this miserable dump. This place needs some repairs, but I’m sure the landlord will be making improvements soon. When we move away, we’re planning to release 300 cockroaches and two mice, so we can leave the place exactly the way we found it. This is the apartment we live in. It provides shelter.
