Aim: How did disagreements over taxation lead to the American Revolution?
Warm Up: Your parents give you a room, they let you do whatever you want in it, they never bother you in it, you can keep it as sloppy as you want. Then one day, they enter your room and say it’s unacceptable, that you have to clean it exactly as they want it and will be checking up on you every day. What would your reaction be and why?

Ohio Valley Flash Point
British colonies began to push West into the Ohio Valley and began clashing with French settlements The Governor of VA sent Lieutenant Colonel George Washington and 150 VA militiamen in 1754 to secure Virginian claims in Ohio Scuffled w/ French at Ft. Duquesne and the conflict would erupt into the French and Indian War.

French and Indian War The stray shots in the Ohio wilderness touched off a long conflict known in Europe as the 7-Years’-War between Britain and France Became a global conflict between Britain and Prussia on one side, France, Austria, and Russia on the other

Albany Plan of Union 1754 British Gvt. Called an intercontinental Congress in Albany, NY Seven of 13 Colonies showed up Purpose was to keep Iroquois loyal to British in war Helped to achieve greater unity with the Colonies as they began to see a shared sense of purpose

Salutary Neglect Prior to the French and Indian War, The British Government had a policy of “Salutary Neglect” for the colonies. They let them run their own affairs as long as the trade revenue came in from the colonies.

Seven Years’ War began on the American Continent The war was very costly for the British British national Debt increased from £74.6 million in 1755 to £129.6 million in 1764 The British saw this debt as partly an American responsibility

Mercantilist Policy: End of Salutary Neglect
Following the Seven Years’ War, the British followed a policy of mercantilism. They viewed the colonies as a revenue source. Colonies were to be sources of raw materials and markets for finished goods Colonial manufacture cracked down on, and Molasses Act enforced.

Colonists were angry at new taxes and mercantile policy pressed upon them Colonies were more angry over the fact that they had no say in Parliament. As British citizens, they felt they had the right to have their voice heard in the government.
