2 graduated cylinder Function: to measure liquid volume; units are in milliliters (mL)

3 balance Function: to measure mass; unit is grams (g)

4 goggles Function: to protect the eyes

5 beaker Function: to measure liquid volume (mL); beakers are also used to transfer liquids to other containers

6 hand lens Function: to magnify objects, or to make them appear larger in order to see details

7 test tube holder Function: to hold test tubes, especially when the test tube is very hot or cold or is being transferred to a place that is dangerous to exposed hands

8 flask Function: to hold larger volumes than test tubes; units in milliliters (mL)

9 test tube rack Function: to hold multiple test tubes

10 Bunsen burner Function: to create intense heat and an open flame; exercise caution when using

11 test tube Function: to hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid

12 petri dish Function: a shallow dish used to view samples and to culture cells

13 tongs Function: to grip and lift objects

14 metric ruler Function: to measure objects with centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm)

15 thermometer Function: to measure temperature in Celsius

16 medicine dropper Function: to transfer small quantities of a liquid

17 dissecting pan Function: to hold plants or animals that are going to be dissected; spongy bottom allows for pins to be inserted through the specimen

18 dissecting needles Function: to probe a specimen that is being examined or dissecting; often used to hold open flaps of skin or tissue

19 forceps Function: to grasp and hold objects

20 scalpel Function: to cut during a dissection; VERY SHARP!!!

21 dissecting pin Function: to hold open or to hold down parts of a specimen during a dissection; can be pushed through the specimen and into the pan

22 scissors Function: to cut

23 microscope Function: to examine small objects in greater detail

24 microscope slide Function: to hold small, flat specimens that are viewed under the microscope

25 cover slip Function: to keep solid specimens pressed flat, and liquid samples shaped into a flat layer of even thickness
