1 Understanding Challenges
Learning Target: Analyze quotes and identify connections between the concepts of challenges and heroism. The Concept of Challenge: Answer question1 is THREE complete sentences. Quote A challenge is… A – Group A & E In the second column, you will paraphrase the quote provided for you. You will also provide examples of what this quote is saying. Here you will circle what type of challenge your quote represents. B – Group B C – Group C D = Group D

2 Understanding Challenges
Quote A challenge is… A – Group A&E B – Group B C – Group C D = Group D People should be judged by how well they behaving in difficult situations rather than how they behave in easy situations. Taking on difficult challenges allows a person to have greater sense of victory. Strong people make opportunities for obstacles. Challenges are opportunities to discover yourself and your strengths.

3 A Wrinkle in Time Today we are going to read a quick story about three individuals who are faced with a challenge. By the end of our lesson, we will be able to determine whether this challenge was an obstacle, an opportunity or a difficult task. We will also analyze the imagery (descriptive language) of a story. Turn to page 8 and answer our three Before Reading questions.

4 Page 8 When you read, you have to make meaning of and picture every detail; when you view, you don’t have to work as hard since the picture is created for you. Details about setting and characters are typically provided in the beginning to introduce the story and set the context (facts about a particular event)

5 A Wrinkle in Time Our first read is to always VISUALIZE.

6 Second Read Our second read is to always COMPREHEND.
Double underline imagery and details. Write an objective summary.

7 Comic Strip Now that we have double underlined our imagery and details, we are going to create a comic strip to show what is taking place in this story. You will be sketching out 6 scenes: Scene 1: Paragraph 1 Scene 2: Paragraphs 2-3 Scene 3: Paragraph 4 Scene 4: Paragraphs 5-10 Scene 5: Paragraph 11 Scene 5: Paragraph 12 Bring the author’s words to life. Pay close attention to the imagery and details you underlined and use that as you guide when drawing out what took place in this excerpt.

8 After Reading Answer questions 6-8 on page 10. Be sure to write in complete sentences. Final Analysis: Look back at your comic strip. Look at scene 1 and scene 6. What are the major differences? In paragraph 12, the author wrote “She looked wildly up and down the street, saw the children and put her hand to her mouth as thought to stifle a scream, grabbed the little boy and rushed indoors with him.” Why do you believe this lady reacted the way she did? What do you think would happen if the other ladies in the neighborhood saw this happen?

9 Final Analysis Writing Prompt: Revise paragraph 12 of the excerpt using the following guidelines: Substitute the third-person point of view to first-person. Either being the lady who was afraid or the little boy playing with his ball. Add more imagery to strengthen the description of the setting. Add more details to better show the character’s perspective (point of view) Complete this on pg 12 in your I.N.
