3. Eligible Members
Members who involuntarily separated under honorable conditions
Members retiring from active duty
Members voluntarily separating through a military department force reduction or force shaping program
Members who are being discharged for medical reasons
Note: Service members voluntarily separating at EAOS or involuntarily separating under conditions other than honorable are not eligible.

4. Purpose
The purpose of Permissive Temporary Duty (PTDY) and Excess Leave (EL) is job searching and house hunting to facilitate a smooth relocation to civilian life.
The program allows time away from your assigned duties to assist in your transition so you don’t have to take leave.

5. Execution of PTDY Involuntary separating members get 10 days PTDY
Retiring members receive 20 days PTDY
Members stationed OCONUS or members CONUS who have legal domiciles OCONUS may receive an additional 10 days PTDY depending on circumstances
Members can choose to take PTDY in increments before transition or
Members can combine PTDY with terminal leave

6. Excess Leave
A period during which the Service member is not entitled to pay and allowances
Not a duty status and should only be used in rare circumstances
No more than 30 days EL can be granted.
A minus leave credit on date of discharge or separation that is subject to checkage
Not an option for Retiree’s

7. How does this benefit you?
Allows for immediate income upon separation
Allows for an income so you can take your time making important decisions in your transition
Sets you up to receive two incomes if you plan accordingly
