1 Climate Change and Waste Incineration

2 The most climate friendly approach

3 If Nova Scotia can ban organics from landfill so can we!
This is an article about the organics ban in Nova Scotia

4 This is the city of Vancouver’s study comparing waste management options This slide explores the impact of the Vancouver composting program. Its worth pointing out that GHG from organic materials in the WTE option is not included. That’s why the WTE number goes up when Vancouver’s organics are mostly removed from the waste stream.

5 If You Don’t Count Carbon from Burning Organics WTE Looks Like the Best Option
This is a slide used by Metro in their presentation. WTE is only counting fossil derived carbon. If you look closely you will notice that WTE is still more carbon intensive then natural gas. Its also important to point out that The methane from landfill will continue to be release for years even if we stopped dumping garbage in landfills tomorrow. The appropriate way to calculate emissions from waste management is to combine the emissions not to compare one to the other.

6 This is the actual total CO2 from all sources
This slide (also from the US EPA) shows emissions from all sources included in regards to incineration.

7 Plastics – not an energy solution a design problem

8 This slide is from the presentation Jeffrey Morris did for the board of trade. Morris is highlighting the life cycle analysis related to waste management Morris shows that it takes 10 barrels of oil to produce one tonne of garbage which when burned is equal to 1 barrel of oil.

11 Give the The Next Generation a Chance to Lead the Way
Locking yourself into waste incineration robs other waste management initiatives of funding and much needed staff time
