2 Cities grow and change The industrial city
Before the industrial revolution most cities existed to serve as trade, political, military or religious functions. In the industrial age factories required raw materials coming in, goods going out and being sold in the market.

3 Urbanization the growth of people moving from the countryside to the cities. examples of growth of cities from urbanization of workers looking for industrialized jobs

4 Lowell, Massachusetts it was the first cities to industrialize due to its textile factories

5 Chicago, Illinois had a huge meat packing industry

6 Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
had a lot of jobs in the steel industry.

7 Life in the industrial city
Cities were a lively and crowded place

8 Health conditions in the city was bad due to the burning of coal

9 At first city’s had poor sanitation

10 Eventually reforms were made and cities built water and sewer systems

11 The first skyscraper designed in 1883 helped solve the problem of available space in a city.

12 Underground railway systems solved the problem of congestion of the city streets

13 Electricity made home life more convenient.

14 The suburbs As cities became more crowded they expanded their boundaries to include the surrounding areas.

15 Education, Leisure, and the Arts
Increased industrialization created a need for a more educated workforce. after 1870, government passed laws requiring education for all children Not all social classes were educated equally Vocational and technical schools gave some member of the working class more opportunities

16 Leisure With the growth of railroad it allowed more families to enjoy a range of activities Cultural activities became available Public libraries and museums opened for the public.

17 Change in the arts Romanticism: movement that originated in Europe partly as a reaction from the industrial revolution
