1 Graphing Motion

2 2 Variables must be recorded to graph motion:
-position -time This allows you to plot a Position-Time Graph.

3 Slope = Rise Run = ∆y ∆x = ∆d ∆t = Velocity d t

4 The slope of a position-time graph is the velocity of an object
UNIFORM VELOCITY (constant velocity) Line is straight and slope (anywhere) on the line is velocity

5 Constant Velocity Graph Shapes
Horizontal Line: - Slope is zero - velocity is zero - Object is at rest Steeper slope: - Greater Velocity Negative Slope: velocity is negative Negative indicates object is moving in opposite direction.

6 Example: Position-Time Graph
In which section are you likely traveling the fastest? Calculate: vAB, vBC, vCD, vDE

7 If the motion is “NON-UNIFORM”, you can find the average velocity by joining 2 points on a graph and finding the slope of the line (a tangent)
