1 Mapping the Galaxy with Red Clump Giants
[3.6] [4.5] COBE Bar -1<b<0 0<b<1 COBE Bar -2<b<-1 1<b<2 Inner structure? (also see Nishiyama et al 2005) -3<b<-2 2<b<3 Long Bar -5<b<-3 3<b<5 “Red clump giants” show up as a bump in log N -log S histograms. The apparent magnitude of the bump can be converted to distance of the mass overdensity since red clump giants are excellent standard candles M[4.5]=-1.62±0.03.

2 Identifying Red Clump overdensities
GLIMPSE 360 GLIMPSE/GLIMPSE II VelaCar GLIMPSE 360 ? GLIMPSE360 shows preliminary evidence for such a slope change coherent in longitude-magnitude space from l=110-90o at m= If red clump, d= 7-9 kpc Long /COBE Bar-Red clump Data Processing artifact COBE Bar -Tip of RGB Overdensities of red clump giants in the Galactic disk produces changes in slope of log N-log S histograms. The app. magnitude of these inflection points maps to distance.

3 Distances to the Red Clump Overdensities
Distance to red-clump giant over-densities compared to schematic of Galactic structure. [4.5] band, not yet corrected for extinction Bar(s) Benjamin et al 2010 (in prep) GLIMPSE360 may have detected the Outer arm as a stellar mass density enhancement … (but why not the Perseus Arm?) Arm?
