Warm up # 4 Do you believe that you have the right to total privacy within your home (as long as you are doing nothing illegal.) How Totalitarianism controls people?
Totalitarianism- Government Control all aspects of public or private lives. Government Controls: Business- Tells people what to sell and buy Family Life- Tells people what to think Housing – Tells people where to live Religion – Tells people what to believe Education – Tells people what to learn.

Weapons of Totalitarianism
Police Terror- Stalin’s officers killed anyone that went against him Great Purge- Stalin killed any politicians that opposed him. Propaganda- Government controlled every aspect of communication. Religious persecution- Destroyed churches and persecuted any practicing believers.

Stalin’s main rival was Trotsky
1. Who was Joseph Stalin and What did Stalin do to gain power in the Soviet Union? (pg. 395) Joseph Stalin was a leader of the Bolshevik party. From 1922 to 1927 he placed his followers in strategic government offices, and by 1928 he was in total command of the communist party. Stalin’s main rival was Trotsky Stalin exiled Trotsky in 1929 then had his spies kill him in Mexico in 1940

2. Define what Totalitarianism is. (pg. 395)
Totalitarianism describes a government that takes total, centralized state control over every aspect of public and private life. Usually ran by a dictator A dictator is a ruler with total power over a country

3. What freedoms would you lose if you lived in a totalitarian state
3. What freedoms would you lose if you lived in a totalitarian state? ( look at the chart on pg 396) You could lose your freedom of speech, property, beliefs, choice of what to buy, choice of what to sell, choice of where to work, or how to live your life… Since the government owns all the communication… you don’t know whether the way you are being treated is right or wrong.

4. Define what a command economy is and give your opinion on whether or not it is an efficient economic system. (pg. 396) A system in which the government made all economic decisions. Under this system, political leaders identify the country’s economic needs and determine how to fulfill them. Command economies are always present in communist nations

5. What were the 5 year plans and what did they focus on producing
5. What were the 5 year plans and what did they focus on producing? What items did the government choose not to produce? (pg 396) The 5 year plans were Stalin’s plans to develop the Soviet Union. Their focus was on producing steel, coal, oil, and electricity. The government limited production of consumer goods. Stalin sacrificed the comfort of his people for the protection of his country.

6. Describe what life was like for workers. (pg 397)
Life was tough for workers, the government controlled every aspect of their lives. Workers were assigned jobs, hours, and needed the police’s permission to move. Stalin’s first 5 year plan were moderately successful, his second 5 year plan was extremely successful.

90 percent of peasants lived on collective farms.
7. List the ways peasants would resist working on collective farms, and describe how Stalin used the secret police to keep them in line. (pg 397) Peasants resisted working on collective farms by killing livestock and destroying crops. Stalin’s secret police kept the peasants in line by using terror and violence to herd them onto collective farms. 90 percent of peasants lived on collective farms.

8. Who did the secret police work for, and how did they catch traitors? (pg 397) The secret police worked for Stalin, they monitored telephone lines, read mail, and planted informers to catch traitors. Dictators use terror and violence to make sure their citizens obey them.

9. What was the Great Purge and who were its’ targets? (bottom of pg397- top of 398) The Great Purge was a campaign of terror that targeted thousands of old Bolsheviks that threatened Stalin’s power. Stalin executed his political rivals for “crime against the state”

Religious persecution… Russian Orthodox churches were destroyed.

Create a Totalitarian State Your table will create a modern day Totalitarian state using the same tools as Stalin to take control and keep control of the United States. 1) Dictatorship/Dynamic Leader- Who will you select to be the face of your political party that will attract people to your political party and maintain the attention of the public once in office. Explain why you selected that leader. 2) Ideology- List 3 beliefs/goals of your government that will attract people to your political party. 3) State Control over Society- Identify 3 ways you will control people and keep them in line/indoctrinated or convinced that your state is the best and only way to live. 4)Dependence on Modern Technology- List three ways you will use technology to ensure people are not trying to rebel or create any dissention against your government. 5) Organized Violence- Identify 3 groups of people you will oppress and explain why oppressing each group will help ensure you stay in power. 6) Create a name, slogan, and symbol for your political Party
