Chapter 3 3-6 Slopes of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
4
Parallel Lines Parallel lines have the same slope. ex: y = 3x + 5
5
Perpendicular Lines Perpendicular lines have slopes that are opposite reciprocals. Their product is -1. ex: 3 · -⅓ = -1
6
Example #1 Are these lines parallel, perpendicular, or neither?
7
Example #2 Are these lines parallel, perpendicular, or neither?
8
Example #3 Are these lines parallel, perpendicular, or neither?
9
Example #4 Are these lines parallel, perpendicular, or neither?
10
Example #5 Find the equation of a line parallel to
y = -x + 4 that contains the point (-2, 5).
11
Example #6 Find the equation of a line perpendicular to
5x + 2y = 1 that contains the point (10, 0).
12
Example #7 Find the equation of a line perpendicular to
y = ½x - 9 that contains the point (1, 7).
13
Example #8 Find the equation of a line parallel to
5y - x = 0 that contains the point (15, -4).
14
Example #9 Find the equation of a line perpendicular to
y = -⅔x + 15 that contains the point (2, 8).
