LT 1 Physical & Chemical Changes
Learning Target We will compare and contrast physical and chemical changes. I will show that I know it with at least an 80% accuracy in a graphic organizer exit slip. Reflection/Exit Integrated Science 1B (Part 2) Standard 2 Chemical Reactions

Physical and Chemical Changes
Agenda: Notes Foldable Exit Slip
4
Matter Matter is everywhere.
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Matter is constantly experiencing both chemical and physical changes.
5
Physical Property Any property of matter that does not change its chemical composition.
6
Examples of Physical Properties
7
Chemical Property The ability or inability of substances to undergoes a chemical reaction and produce new substances. (the reactivity or non-reactivity of a substance)
8
Physical Change Physical changes occur when matter changes its property but not its chemical nature. Physical property changes could include a change in: state of matter, texture, shape, size, solubility, color, odor, volume, mass, weight, electrical conductivity, and density.
9
Physical Change
10
Chemical Change Chemical changes are changes matter undergoes when it becomes new or different matter.
11
Example of Chemical Change
A chemical change occurs when fireworks are used. Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. These change chemically as they light up the sky.

Foldable Physical & Chemical Properties and Changes Directions: Cut out and paste your foldable into your journal. Add information to the flaps and under the flaps from your notes. Put the definitions on the flaps. Put examples under the flaps.
40
Reflection Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) about the difference between a chemical and physical change. Give examples of each.
