Variables

1. What is a variable? -anything that can change in an experiment 2. What is a constant variable? -factors that are kept the same during an experiment

Variables 3. What is an independent variable? -the one factor that a scientist changes in an experiment 4. What is another name for an independent variable? -manipulated variable

Variables 5. What is a dependent variable? -the factor that changes as a result of what you did 6. What is another name for a dependent variable? -responding variable

Variables Examples 7. Janice owns a toy shop; she thinks that giving her employees caffeine will make them construct the toys quicker. Janice divides her employees into two groups of 20; she gives caffeine to Group A and she doesnt give caffeine to Group B. At the end of an hour she found that Group A constructed 100 toys and Group B constructed 150 toys. Answer the following about Janices experiment: – Janices hypothesis: – control variable: – independent variable: – dependent variable: – conclusion: What could Janice do differently? Giving employees caffeine will make them work faster Equal groups, time to work Caffeine to Group A Amount of toys constructed Caffeine does not make work more productive

Variables examples 8. Bill loves his grandmothers chocolate chip cookies. He would like more chocolate chips in the cookies, but hes not sure if more chips will change the crunchy texture of these cookies. He will need to do an experiment. Identify the following in Bills experiment: – control variable: – independent variable: – dependent variable: Cookie recipe, baking time and temperature Amount of chocolate chips Cookie texture

Variables Examples 9. Sally wants to conduct an experiment to see if Jacks Beanstalk Fertilizer will increase the height of bean plants. Describe what Sally should do; make sure to include a hypothesis, number of participants/plants, control variable, independent variable, and dependent variable.
