After you finish writing, silently read an AR book. Make sure to put the date beside your response and keep all bellwork responses for the week on the same page. They will be due the first day of the following week. Be sure to stay organized and keep up! Maniac Magee Ch. 3&4 As I read aloud chapters 3 and 4, you complete the six comprehension questions (4 for ch. 3, 2 for ch. 4) If you notice any figurative language, be sure to note it in the chart. After reading, check your answers with your group. With your group, discuss point of view and try to answer the questions on the ch. 3 page. Also with your group, complete the prediction at the bottom. Chapter 3 answers: Amanda Beale Books So her brother and sister would not color inside them To borrow a book Point of View answer: The book is told from the third person omniscient point of view. We know it is third person because none of the characters are telling the story. It’s omniscient because we know the feelings of other characters besides Maniac. For example, the text says, “Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan hated each other, but because they were strict Catholics, they wouldn’t get a divorce.” If this book were told from Maniac’s point of view, we wouldn’t know this information.

Maniac Magee Ch. 3&4 (cont.)
With your group, discuss dramatic irony. Try to figure out the answers to both questions by using context clues and the information given to you. Chapter 4 Answers: The high school star quarterback Maniac Magee Irony answers: Dramatic irony is in this chapter because the reader is aware of who the running kid is and also knows why he has a book. The characters on the field, however, do not know this information. From this chapter, the reader can infer that Maniac is eager to learn (because he wants to borrow a book), friendly (because he speaks to everyone), and athletic (because he punted the ball, and it sailed spiraling “more perfectly than anything Brian Denehy had ever thrown.”)
